History

Providing Services and Support to People with Developmental Disabilities, Families and Caregivers since 1961

In 1961, Providence Center was created to serve the important and exclusive needs of children with developmental disabilities, their families and caregivers. It was the first such center in Anne Arundel County.

Fifteen years later, in 1975, when the Equal Education Law was passed that allowed children with developmental disabilities to attend special education classes in public schools, Providence Center refocused its services to adults with developmental disabilities. Today it serves nearly 500 individuals at five locations in Anne Arundel County.

Since 1975, Providence Center has continued to evolve in order to meet the changing needs of those its serves to now including a range of programs and services such as a supported employment program, a one-of-a-kind Art Institute, Pottery Studio, Woodworking Shop, Horticulture Greenhouse and Gardens, a comprehensive activity program and a seniors program offering retirees a host of activities to keep them engaged and involved in enjoying a robust life.

Most recently, Providence Center began leading an effort to establish Communities of Practice designed specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities who want to be more active in managing their day-to-day lives and designing their own futures.
