Art Institute
Providence Art Institute was founded in 1991. Its mission is to provide professional, comprehensive, and integrated instruction in the visual and performing arts. Emphasis is placed on the special needs of artists with disabilities. The Art Institute provides individuals with disabilities many opportunities to fully participate in a wide variety of cultural experiences, including professional art instruction and exhibitions.

The result of the Art Institute’s efforts is an exciting and successful art curriculum that includes introductory and advanced visual arts classes, various studio workshops, an integrated evening class in sculpture and pottery, and the Odyssey Dance and Drama program, administered in cooperation with Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and Carter School of Dance. Over 150 individuals currently participate in the Art Institute programs. Participants take satisfaction in exhibiting exciting new artwork, selling many of their pieces, and affirming their growing self-esteem.

The Pottery program assists individuals in their development of appropriate work skills and habits using pottery as the medium. Individuals are encouraged to make choices pertaining to their work and social life, build independence, and participate in activities in their communities.
