About Floating Gardens in Maryland
Providence Center now offers floating gardens, which are beautiful plant-filled platforms designed to support and improve your waterfront. These gardens provide natural filtration and a habitat for local wildlife. We cultivate the native plants and build the floating platforms.
Each floating garden we build consists of a Styrofoam foundation with ports to hold plant-filled perforated baskets. These baskets are designed to anchor to a pier and contain shoreline plants that have been propagated by Providence Center from local seed sources. The roots grow downward into the water during spring and summer, acting like filtering straws to improve water clarity and absorb excess nutrients caused by runoff. The plants stave off deadly algae blooms associated with pollutants by using them in natural growth processes. Small fish, crabs, and shellfish also benefit from the natural habitat created by the cluster of roots in a floating garden.
The floating gardens from Providence Center can be purchased fully-assembled for $150 or bought as a kit to assemble at home for $100. They are easy to assemble, and shoppers can choose from a variety of plants—Providence Center can even recommend the best plants for your particular water environment to ensure the healthiest habitat possible. At the end of the season, customers can recycle their old plants and purchase new plant baskets for $10 (without the exchange, new baskets are $14 each).
