About Our Pottery Studio

Providence Center’s Pottery Studio, located in Arnold, Maryland, has been in operation for 40 years and focuses on producing regionally themed and functional pottery. Our pottery line is sold at gift shops and galleries along the East Coast, and in our retail store, Gifts That Give. Our studio also offers paint your own pottery events and pottery classes. All proceeds from our pottery studio go back to support Providence Center’s mission.

Paint Your Own Pottery Parties

We offer three different options for parties at our pottery studio in Arnold. These include children’s parties, pottery to-go at home parties, and adult parties and groups.

Children’s Parties

All parties include:

  • Exclusive use of our studio for 10-20 painters.
  • A personalized mug or plate signed by party attendees for the guest of honor.
  • Expert guidance from our staff artist(s).
  • Breakage waiver – We won’t charge you if a piece is accidentally broken during the party.
  • Clean up services – We’ll take care of the mess, during and after your event, so you can relax and enjoy the party.
  • Glazing and firing of pottery pieces.
  • Tracking – We’ll track who painted what so you don’t have to worry when it comes time to pick up the finished pottery.
  • Wrapped and ready pick up – We’ll have each piece wrapped, bagged and ready to pick up on your scheduled pickup date, typically within 7-10 days.
  • 15% off weeknight parties (Monday-Thursday)

Pottery To-Go At Home Parties

Our pottery to-go packages include a bin full of everything needed to have a pottery party at home. This includes pieces of pottery, glaze, brushes, and instructions. Simply return the bin and pottery after your party and receive your fired pottery one week later.

We currently offer pottery to-go for 10, as well as a deluxe package for 15. Pricing for Pottery To-Go for 10 starts at $125. Our Deluxe Package Pottery To-Go for 15 starts at $230. Stop by our studio to see our pre-made pottery to go party bins!
Please call 443-955-6073 to discuss personalizing your bin based on the party theme or adding pottery for additional painters. 

Adult Parties & Groups

Celebrate a birthday, shower, retirement, or just have a fun girls night out! BYOB and favorite snack.

All adult parties include:

  • Exclusive use of our studio for 8-20 painters for 2 hours.
  • Expert guidance from our staff artist(s).
  • Breakage waiver – We won’t charge you if a piece is accidentally broken during the party.
  • Clean up services – We’ll take care of the mess, during and after your event, so you can relax and enjoy the party.
  • Glazing and firing of pottery pieces.
  • Tracking – We’ll track who painted what so you don’t have to worry when it comes time to pick up the finished pottery.
  • Wrapped and ready pick up – We’ll have each piece wrapped, bagged and ready to pick up on your scheduled pick up date, typically within 7-10 days.

$10 studio fee per painter plus the cost of pottery, which ranges from $4- $40.

Pottery Classes

We offer wheel throwing and hand-building classes for students of all skill levels. Our classes are offered in six-week long sessions, however, we offer a one time “try it out” session for those who aren’t ready to commit to a six-week class. Classes are for adults only (16 & up) unless otherwise specified in our class schedule. Spring, Summer, and Winter sessions available.

Try It Out Wheel Throwing Class

Students will try out the potter’s wheel and learn the basic techniques of making wheel-thrown pottery, such as centering, opening and pulling. We will discuss the process of making pottery, from wet clay to a finished piece.
Includes expert instruction, 2 lbs. of clay, all necessary tools, and glazing and firing of your piece.
Cost: $50 per student. Time: 2 hours.

Beginner Wheel Throwing

Students will be introduced to the potter’s wheel and learn the basic techniques of making wheel-thrown pottery, such as centering, opening, and pulling. Students will practice these techniques in order to make basic shapes including cylinders, bowls, and plates. Students will also learn about types of clay, firings, glazes, and basic decorating techniques.
No prior pottery experience necessary. Includes expert instruction, 25 lbs. of clay, glaze, firing, and all necessary tools. 
Cost: $185 per student. Time: Six-week long session, 1.5 hours per week.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing

Students who have grasped the basics of wheel throwing, such as centering and pulling, will be introduced to more advanced wheel techniques and forms. Students will learn how to make handles and lids, and alter wheel-thrown forms.
Prior potter’s wheel experience is necessary. Includes expert instruction, 50 lbs, of clay, glaze, firing, and all necessary tools.
Cost: $225 per student. Time: Six-week long session, 2 hours per week.

Hand-Building Pottery

Students will learn the basics of hand-building with clay and complete projects such as boxes, slab plates, and tiles. Students will be introduced to clay terminology and learn about types of clay, firing, and glazes.
No prior pottery experience necessary. Includes expert instruction, 25 lbs. of clay, glaze, firing, and all necessary tools. 
Cost: $175 per student. Time: Six-week long session. 1.5 hours per week.

FAQ

How soon will my pottery be ready to pick up?
For parties – pottery will be ready for pick up 7-10 days after your event on your scheduled pickup date.
For pottery classes – pottery will be ready 14 days after the final class session. All completed work must be picked up 60 days after the final class session.

Do you have walk-in hours?
No. We currently do not offer walk-in studio hours.

Is the pottery food safe?
Yes. For the safety of our potters and customers, all clay and glazes are non-toxic. All of our finished pottery is food-safe. We do not allow outside clay or glazes to be brought into our studio.

Who are your instructors?
For parties – 1-3 trained staff artists will be present during your paint your own pottery event to help with set-up, instruction, and clean-up.
Our pottery class instructors are professional local ceramic artists. Most have a degree in Fine Arts or have spent at least 10 years learning the craft. We can’t wait to share our pottery knowledge with you!

What is your cancellation policy?
We require a $50 non-refundable deposit due at the time of booking your party or class. Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel a party or your spot in one of our classes, so we can offer it to someone else.
