About Our Pottery Classes

We offer pottery wheel and hand-building classes for students of all skill levels. Classes are ages 16 & up unless otherwise specified in our class schedule. Spring, Summer, and Winter sessions available.

May 2019

Try It Out: Pottery Wheel, $50

Friday, May 17, 6:30-8:30pm

Instructors: Tom Wright and Ashley Wright

Try out the potter’s wheel and learn the basic techniques of making wheel-thrown pottery in this two-hour class. We will discuss the process of making pottery, from wet clay to a finished piece. Perfect for those not ready to commit to a six-week class or just looking for a fun, evening activity. Includes instruction, 2 lbs. of clay, and all necessary tools. Pottery created in the class will be ready for pick up two weeks later. No experience required.

 

June 2019

Beginner Pottery Wheel, $185

Monday evenings, June 3-July 8, 6:00-8:00pm

Instructor: Lydia Ferwerda

During this six-week introductory class, learn the basic steps and techniques of creating wheel-thrown pottery.  Each week, the instructor will present a new technique or skill and students will have time to create for the remainder of the class. Projects include pinch pots, mugs, and soup bowls. Fee includes 25 pounds of clay, glaze, and firing. No prior pottery experience necessary. 

Intermediate Pottery Wheel, $225

Tuesday evenings, June 4- July 9 6:00-8:00pm

Open Studio: Thursdays, 2:00-8:00pm (or during regular studio hours, by appointment)

Instructor: Tom Wright

In the intermediate wheel class, students who have grasped the basics of wheel throwing will be introduced to more advanced techniques to create a variety of forms. Learn how to trim on the wheel, alter and decorate pottery, and create complex forms such as vases, plates, and lidded vessels. Fee includes 50 pounds of clay, open studio time, glaze, and firing. Beginner Pottery Wheel class or prior experience is required. 

Pottery and Herb Gardening, $50

Wednesday, June 19, 6:00-8:00pm

Instructors: Ashley Wright and Nathan Ulrich

Come create a small, custom planter and garden stake with the guidance of a pottery instructor. Learn basic hand-building techniques and decorating techniques to make the perfect accent for your indoor or outdoor home garden. In the second portion of the class, Providence Center’s horticulturalist will talk about planting and maintaining an indoor or outdoor herb garden. Students will choose an herb for their planter. Planter, garden stake and herb will be ready to pick up two weeks later.

 

July and August 2019

Fall Luminaries, $45

Friday, September 13, 6:00-8:00pm

Instructor: TBD

Create a custom, fall themed luminary to light up your indoor or outdoor space. Our pottery instructor will guide you through the process of hand building, carving, and decorating a fall themed luminary.
